The season is about to start. Schedules are locked. Teams are asking when they can get on. And the pressure builds quickly.

The Real Question

In these moments, the question often becomes: “Can we get this field ready?”

What Gets Missed

• Infill hasn’t been rebalanced after prior use or snow load

• High-traffic areas are already trending thinner or harder

• Previous maintenance didn’t fully reset surface consistency

• Small inconsistencies across the field are ignored because “it’s close enough”

Individually, none of these feel like a reason to delay. Together, they create a surface that’s inconsistent from the first whistle.

Where It Goes Wrong

Most fields don’t fail because someone made a bad decision. They struggle because someone made a rushed one. You might get through the first game. Maybe even the first few weeks. But what shows up later is:

• Inconsistent footing

• Accelerated wear in high-use areas

• More frequent maintenance interventions

• A surface that never quite stabilizes

And now you’re managing problems instead of preventing them.

The Discipline

The calendar doesn’t determine readiness. Surface condition does. That means sometimes the right call is to wait. Sometimes it’s to adjust. Sometimes it’s to do less—not more.

That’s not always the popular decision. But it’s usually the right one.
